The Montgomery County Stroke Association will miss one of its long-time members, Norma deSabla, who passed away on September 17, 2005.
Listed below is a tribute to Norma written by Paul Grayson, immediate past-president of the MCSA. (Readers may also wish to visit the "News" section of this website and see the article entitled, "In Memoriam: Norma deSabla.")
On Friday mornings at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, for year after year, with her good friend and pianist-accompanist Blanche Shaffer, Norma deSabla led and encouraged a group of stroke survivors and caregivers known as the "Sunshine Singers." With or without musical talent, everyone was welcome to sing the old songs of the 1890's and the show tumes of the 1920's. Some stroke survivors with profound aphasia found that they could sing; Norma was one such person. A camaraderie founded in music brought many together, and some even discovered an unsusupected ability in singing. The group was invited to perform at several nursing home, where they received warm receptions. And everyone in the group knew how much they owed to the dynamic lady with the big smile who sang like a bird.
